Description

The Cottage is a mid-18th century house that was altered in the mid-19th century to form two cottages. It’s built of coursed limestone rubble with a gabled stone slate roof and end stacks finished in brick. The house has a three-unit plan, and is two storeys and an attic, with a three-window front. There are segmental stone arches over a 19th-century plank door and 20th-century casement windows; timber lintels over 20th-century first-floor casements. Two gabled dormers light the attic space. A 19th-century outshut and a 20th-century extension are located at the rear. Inside, you’ll find ogee-stopped chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, a wood bressumer over the open fireplace on the left side, with adjoining winder stairs, and a renewed winder staircase on the right. The ground floor has stone-flagged flooring. The roof structure comprises collar-truss rafters with butt purlins.
