Description
The Combe War Memorial is a First World War memorial of unknown date, located on a paved area within a larger green space, near Oak Cottage, Oakdene, and The Cock Inn, all of which are listed Grade II.
The memorial features a small stone Latin cross that rises from a pedestal with an arched collar, which is set on a two-stepped base. The north face of the pedestal has an incised inscription that reads: "TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN OF COOMBE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WARS 1914 – 1918 GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS 1939-1945." The names of 11 individuals who fell in the First World War are inscribed on the other faces of the pedestal, while a Second World War inscription, which records a single name, is added to the east face.
