Description

Green Close is a house dating from the late medieval period, constructed with coursed limestone rubble and featuring a gabled stone slate roof, along with a ridge stack made of stone finished in brick. Originally a hall house, it was remodeled in the 17th century into a three-unit lobby-entry plan. The building has two storeys and a five-window range, with a large 20th-century gabled porch added to the front. The windows are 20th-century casements, some of which have brick dressings and are topped with timber lintels.

At the rear, there are late 19th-century to early 20th-century ranges made of rendered brick, which have plain tile roofs and brick lateral stacks. Inside, the floors are stone-flagged. To the left of the stack is a late medieval three-bay section featuring a raised chamfered cruck with arch bracing to the collar and trenched purlins. To the left of this section is a late medieval closed truss with a raised cruck and simple mortices for the joists of a former chamber floor in the left bay. The interior also includes early 17th-century stop-chamfered beams from an inserted floor and an unusual stop-chamfered heavy wood surround around the open fireplace. In front of the lobby, there are flat-laid joists, and to the right, heavy stop-chamfered beams with flat-laid joists. Above, there is a three-bay collar-truss roof.
