Description

Claywell Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from 1812, as indicated by the datestone JW 1812 in the left gable. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble, with the front made of dressed stone featuring ashlar dressings. It has a gabled, stone-coped stone slate roof and moulded stone ashlar symmetrical end stacks. The farmhouse is laid out in an L-plan with a rear right wing and stands two storeys high, presenting a symmetrical three-window range.

The entrance features a round arch over a six-panelled door with a fanlight and a porch. Stone lintels are present over early 19th-century eight-pane sash windows. At the rear, there is a similar service range that is also two storeys high, with a two-window range that includes two early 19th-century plank doors with strap hinges to the right, along with two three-light casements and two-light leaded casements.

Inside, the front range features a straight-flight staircase with stick balusters and early 19th-century first-floor fireplaces equipped with cast-iron grates. The rear range includes a large kitchen fireplace with a beaded wood surround and spit racks above, as well as plank doors, service stairs, a sunk dairy at the rear, and a cheese room in the attic. The roof structure consists of butt-purlins. This farmhouse is a complete example of a well-preserved early 19th-century farmhouse.
