Description

Two chest tombs from the mid-19th century are located about 25 yards south of the south porch of St Mary's Church in Chipping Norton. The northern tomb, made of Portland stone, is in a neo-classical style and commemorates John Gibbs, who died in 1860, and Emma Gibbs, who died in 1859. It features a moulded plinth and cornice, vertical brackets with paterae at the ends, a shaped top with flanking scrolls, a central fluted panel, a coved base, and corner anthemion acroteria. The southern tomb honors Thomas Gibbs, who died in 1844, and Sarah Gibbs, who died in 1842. This chest tomb also has a moulded plinth and cornice, with panelled corner piers decorated with husks and raised inscription panels. Despite the differences in material and style, the two tombs share similarities that suggest they were crafted by the same mason.
