Description
No 6 Church Street is a house that may date back to the early 16th century, as it is traditionally regarded as the oldest house in Chipping Norton. However, it is more likely to have originated in the 17th century and features 16th-century windows that may have been taken from the old Grammar School when it was demolished. The building is constructed from coursed and square rubble stone with stone dressings and has a gabled machine-tiled roof. It has an L-shaped plan and stands two storeys tall.
The facade facing the churchyard consists of two bays and a gabled end. The upper floor has Tudor arched windows with one light, set within moulded surrounds, which are identical to those found on the Guildhall. The lower floor features a similar window along with a larger opening that contains 6-pane casements. The gable end includes two 19th-century mullioned windows with dripstones and a 19th-century plank and batten door. The north end of the building has similar Tudor-headed blocked openings, and there are additional examples on the east front. Many of these openings have been renewed, making it difficult to determine if any are original 16th-century features.
