Description

This listing describes a group of two barns, a granary, and a stable located approximately 30 meters northwest of Radford Farmhouse. The buildings date from the early to mid-18th century and are constructed from limestone rubble with wooden lintels, featuring coursed rubble and ashlar quoins, topped with corrugated-sheet roofs.

The larger barn has eight bays and features opposed double doors in the fourth bay, with slits aligned with the trusses. The smaller, five-bay barn to the left also has opposed double doors in the fourth bay, but it has blocked triangular slits. The T-shaped, two-storey stable is positioned to the rear of the larger barn and includes wood-lintelled openings. It has a later gable parapet facing the farmyard and a wide doorway approached by stone steps.

The two-storey granary, built in coursed rubble, is situated between the rear doors of the barns and has a symmetrical two-window front facing the farmyard. It features small two-light casements on both floors, aligned above segmental-arched openings that lead to a space beneath the lower floor. Stone steps lead to a central doorway, which is topped by a wooden dovecote.

Inside, the larger barn has closely spaced trusses with a tiebeam and collar, supporting two rows of butt purlins. The smaller barn has later trusses with trenched purlins, although it may have an earlier origin. The granary is lined with brick, and the stable retains some of its loft floor and stall divisions, with trusses similar to those in the larger barn. This range of buildings forms a cohesive group with the farmhouse and shelter sheds nearby.
