Description
Radford House is a substantial house dating from the mid-17th century, with a 20th-century extension. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and some wooden lintels, topped with Stonesfield-slate roofs and rendered gable stacks. The building has an L-shaped plan and stands two storeys plus an attic. The double-gabled front features a two-window arrangement with stone-mullioned windows of four, three, and two lights, all with labels. To the left of centre, there is a contemporary oak six-panel door beneath a 20th-century canopy. A rear wing extends from the left side, featuring two casements on each floor and a large stepped chimney projection on the gable wall. There is a stair projection at the angle of the ranges and a single-storey 20th-century extension to the right of the main range.
Inside, the house has intersecting stop-chamfered beams and a stone bolection-mould fireplace with a moulded mantel dating from around 1700, along with 17th and 18th-century doors. The butt-purlin roof structure includes re-used smoke-blackened timbers from a late-medieval roof, featuring an arch-braced collar truss.
