Description

Radford Farmhouse and the attached garden walls date from the 17th century, with extensions made in the early 19th century and some remodeling in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed from coursed limestone rubble, featuring some ashlar dressings, and has artificial stone-slate roofs with ashlar stacks. It has a three-unit lobby-entry plan that extends to the rear, along with subsidiary ranges.

The farmhouse is two storeys plus an attic and has a four-window front on the earlier main range, which includes mid-19th century windows, each with two sashes and a central mullion, except for a four-pane sash above the secondary entrance in the first bay. The main entrance is located between the second and third bays, aligned with a stack. The shallow-pitched roof has gable parapets and an additional stack to the right.

To the right, there is a rubble subsidiary range with a steeper roof and casement windows featuring wooden lintels. On the left, a complex single-storey range, which was formerly used as a dairy and bakehouse, has a large rubble stack. The early 19th century rear wing, which returns from the right of the main range, has two 12-pane sash windows.

Inside, the farmhouse features chamfered spine beams, a winder stair leading to the attics, and a large central stack with back-to-back fireplaces, one of which is an inglenook fireplace with a chamfered bressumer. The interior also includes fielded-panelled doors, cupboards, and shutters, as well as an early 19th century stair with stick balusters.

The brick-lined rubble walls with flat copings extend from the main range, enclosing a square front garden that ramps down from approximately 3 metres high to about 1.5 metres. The farmhouse is part of a close group with nearby barns and shelter sheds.
