Description
This is a late 17th-century house and shop, substantially refronted around 1800. It is located on Bridge Street, Witney. The front is constructed of coursed limestone rubble, with an early 19th-century stucco finish and raised quoins. The roof is gabled, covered in concrete tiles, and has a left-hand stack finished in brick above a stone base. The building features a 3-unit through-passage plan. It is two storeys high with an attic, and has a six-window front. The entrance has an early 19th-century beaded six-panelled door set in a beaded stone architrave with a bracketed open pediment. A shop front and a side entrance were added in the early 20th century. The front windows are early 19th-century eight-pane sashes within raised eared architraves. A gabled roof dormer with a 20th-century casement window is also present.
The rear of the building incorporates 18th-century ranges of similar materials, including a two-window range with a 1745 datestone and a late 18th-century two-bay addition. Inside, a large six-panelled door leads to the rear of the through-passage. The dog-leg staircase with a landing features turned balusters, originally dating to the early 18th century but likely reset and rebuilt around 1800. A room to the right has a panelled dado from around 1800. Other interior features include cased beams, chamfered spine beams with run-out stops on the first floor, and a collar-truss roof with butt purlins.
