Description
This gazebo, located about 30 meters southeast of number 115 on Burford and Upton High Street, is a garden building believed to date from around 1700. It is attributed to Christopher Kempster, a local quarryman who achieved success while working for Sir Christopher Wren. The structure is built of rubble with coursed and squared dressings and consists of two storeys, featuring a coped gable at the front.
On the first floor, there is an arched recess accessed by stone steps from the left, leading to a landing with an arched door that has quoined voussoirs. Within the recess is a triangular-headed doorway with a label. Beneath the landing of the stairs, there is an unusual mason's mark. The ground floor features an octagonal window set in panelled spandrels and a square surround, similar to the Great House. Additionally, there is a lunette window on the northern return. It is noteworthy that the plan of the gazebo is slightly skewed, which typically suggests a later date.
