Description

Sydney Cottage and The Lodge is a house, originally a large cottage, incorporating a former barn to the south. The main structure dates to the early 18th century and was remodelled in the mid-19th century. It is built of coursed rubble with a Cotswold stone roof. The house faces east, towards the garden, and has two two-storey gables with architraves and keystones to the glazing-bar sash windows. It features coped verges and finials, and a large window with marginal glazing to the south. The road-facing side has coped verges to the left, two ashlar chimneys, one storey and an attic, and two gabled half-dormers to the left and centre. All windows are glazing-bar sashes, and there is a glazed front door.

The house extends uphill to the right into a converted barn. This section has three ashlar chimneys. The road front is ivy-clad and features a 20th-century bulls-eye window at a low level, with only one slit vent. The garden side is two storeys and an attic with a gabled dormer. The two sections are linked by a lobby with a six-panel door, with raised and fielded panels, and a bracketed flat hood. A decorative cast-iron lamp bracket is located to the left of the door. The interior was not inspected.
