Description
Swan Gallery is a house and shop that was previously an inn. The building dates back to the 16th century, with its front remodeled in the early 19th century and subsequently restored. It is constructed of coursed rubble and features a slate roof with a brick chimney on a rubble plinth to the left. The most prominent feature of the front is a continuous timber lintel and cill at the first floor level. The structure has two storeys and an attic, with two gabled dormers that have leaded lights. On the first floor, there are two 16-pane sash windows, while the ground floor has two hipped bays with glazing-bar sashes.
The north side of the building, which faces Swan Lane, shows evidence of a steeper pitch roof and includes a moulded plinth and an oak first-floor window with two lights, featuring ogee moulding and decorative imbricated details around the window and lintel. At the rear, there is a two-storey extension with three bays on one side and two bays on the other, which contains a mix of sash and casement windows, along with a further single-storey and attic extension beyond.
Inside, the ground floor features a wide fireplace with curved corners and a chamfered pointed-arch door leading to the rear. The joints are fairly closely spaced and stop-chamfered. There is a long rear wing with varying ceiling heights and beams, including a chamfered Tudor-arched fireplace to the east. On the first floor, there is a fireplace with a wooden lintel, next to which is a fine oak and chestnut wood food cupboard with splat balusters on two levels, as well as a further closed 17th-century cupboard to the right of the fireplace. The roof structure includes cut-back ties with triangulated strainers and stop-chamfered members.
