Description

Showell Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early to mid-18th century, with possible earlier elements. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble and ashlar, featuring wooden lintels and a concrete plain-tile roof with ashlar stacks. The building has a three-unit plan that has been extended to four units and stands two storeys plus an attic high.

The front facade is irregular with five windows and includes a doorway to the left of centre, which has a four-panel door set within a 19th-century ashlar porch featuring a semi-circular keystoned archway. Above the doorway is a tripartite sash window. To the left of the entrance are casements with two and three lights, while to the right are two bays with regularly spaced 20th-century casements. The bay at the extreme right is made of ashlar and is slightly later than the rest of the structure. The gables have parapets and stacks, with two additional ridge stacks flanking the entrance bay.

At the rear, there are two small projections that were raised to two storeys in the late 20th century. Inside, some beams feature ogee chamfer stops, and there are gabled roof dormers. An attic beam is said to be inscribed with the year 1724. Showell was historically the site of a deserted village.
