Description

Dunthrop Farmhouse is probably a manor house, dating to the late 17th century, and has undergone alterations and extensions. The building is constructed of coursed squared limestone with ashlar dressings, and has a Welsh-slate roof with ashlar stacks. Originally a small E-plan house, it now includes a rear stair wing and later additions. The building has two storeys plus an attic.

The front of the building, which was originally the rear, has a chamfered plinth and a moulded first-floor string. The central stair wing has a two-light stone-mullioned transomed window at each floor. Three tall single-light stone-transomed windows survive at first floor to the left of the stair wing; elsewhere, earlier windows have been blocked or altered, although there is a later, larger window at each floor. The right-hand end wall originally had two two-light transomed windows at each floor, with single-light windows in the gable, but some of these are now blocked or altered.

The original front retains a central two-storey gabled porch projection, with a round-arched stone doorway containing a later fanlight below a two-light transomed window. It also preserves a projecting wing to the left, with single-light transomed windows; the windows between them are blocked at first floor, covered by an early lean-to extension below. The right wing is larger, with later windows except for a small gable window, and may represent an early alteration. The steep-pitched roof has gable parapets and three stacks with paired shafts. Two 18th–19th century single-storey service ranges are attached to the end of the main range. The interior was not inspected.
