Description

This is a barn and granary built in the 18th century, located approximately 15 meters southeast of Chilson Farmhouse. The structure is made of coursed limestone rubble, squared and coursed on the southwest side, and features a stone slate roof. It consists of a three-bay barn with an adjoining granary and cartshed to the northwest.

The barn has central opposed cart entrances, with the northeast front featuring a central porch that has a blocked entrance. There are smaller double boarded doors with a wooden lintel and a segmental relieving arch, along with a rebuilt gable. The right-hand return has a boarded door with a wooden lintel, while the left-hand return has a blocked doorway. There are triangular vents, some of which are blocked, and a partly-blocked loft opening with a wooden lintel in the left gable end. The southwest side has a central pair of boarded sliding doors.

The granary and cartshed are located to the right of the barn. The loft and ground floor have three-light wooden windows, and the ground floor features a 2-bay open front with a chamfered wooden lintel. There is a later extension to the front with three stone walls and a lean-to corrugated-iron roof. The right gable end has 13 external stone steps leading up to a boarded loft door with a wooden lintel.

Inside the barn, there are collar and tie-beam roof trusses, and a boarded loft over the porch with a boarded door. This barn and granary are part of a complete farmstead group that includes the farmhouse with an attached barn and stables.
