Description

This is a barn, granary, former cart house and stables, built in the 18th century of locally quarried limestone rubble, with a slate roof. It is situated at Pen-y-Graig Farm. The barn has a lofted granary and cart house at its north end, and lofted stables and cart house set at right angles at the south end, creating an L-shaped arrangement. The main barn has winnowing doors instead of wagon bays. A brick segmental-headed doorway is located in the east wall, leading to the yard, flanked by loft loading doors under the eaves. To the right of this doorway are external stone steps incorporating a kennel, leading to a boarded granary doorway. Below this is a wide timber lintel to the former cart house, which has since been infilled with stonework and a boarded door. On the west wall of the barn, a winnowing door is integrated with a loading door above, flanked by further loading doors and vent strips. A corrugated-iron lean-to, added after 1945, houses a motor that powered the farm’s milking machinery. A detached stone slab, marked on the 1880 Ordnance Survey map, once supported the axle of a horse engine. A visible break in the masonry separates the barn from the granary and cart house. The rear of the granary has a loft opening, below which is a doorway to the cart house.

The stables and cart house block is set at right angles to the barn. Originally a lofted farm building, it has been converted into a two-story house with modern windows, most of which are set within original openings. The former cart house projects on the east side of the barn and forms the south side of the farmyard. Its north wall features two wide cart bays with flattened arches, a window, and a doorway, all with stone voussoirs, below three former loft openings now converted to windows. A further loft opening, also converted to a window, is located in the east gable end. A lower projection from the south wall was originally open-fronted but has been blocked with a modern door and window. A blocked loft opening with a timber lintel is in the gable end. To the left of this projection are the former stables, with modern brick-arched windows in the south wall and west gable end, along with modern roof lights. A stone segmental-headed former loft opening is also visible in the gable end.

Inside the barn, original gable ends retain vent strips. The barn roof is a three-bay structure with tie beams, raking struts, two purlins, and a single central post providing support. A threshing floor is laid with slate slabs. The converted stables and cart house retain roof trusses with cambered collar beams.
