Description

Nos. 6 and 6A on Market Place is a town house that now serves as a house and shop. The building dates from the late 15th century, with the front block constructed in the early 19th century. The rear is timber-framed, while the front features early 19th century limestone ashlar. It has a gabled Welsh slate roof, with concrete tiles at the rear, and brick end stacks. The building has a right-angle double-depth plan and is three storeys high with a two-window range.

The late 19th century shop front consists of two square bays with glazing bars, flanking a 20th century door. To the left, there is a late 19th century three-panelled door set within a fluted architrave leading to a through-passage. Keyed stone lintels are present above the 20th century six-pane sashes on the first floor, and above the 19th century horned six-pane sashes on the second floor.

At the rear, there is a late 15th century two-storey wing, with the left side wall featuring a rendered first floor that jetties over the timber-framed ground floor. This wing includes 3- and 4-light moulded wood-mullioned windows and a moulded fascia board at the jetty. A 20th century one-storey extension has been added to the rear.

Inside the late 15th century house, there is part of a stone newel stair in the cellar, quartered and chamfered beams with heavy square joists, and late 16th century dado panelling on the left side wall of the ground floor. In 1515, the house was sold to John Barnes, a mercer, and was purchased by the Brothertons, ironmongers, in the early 18th century.
