Description
Church Mill is a mill and millhouse, now functioning as a farmhouse, dating from the early to mid-18th century, with an early 19th-century extension and alterations. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble and features a gabled stone slate roof with a brick stack on the left end. It has a central-staircase plan, is two storeys high with an attic, and has a three-window range. The front includes a central 20th-century half-glazed door with a 20th-century porch, an 18th-century two-light leaded casement to the right, and a 19th-century two-light casement flanked by early 19th-century eight-pane sashes on the first floor. There is a timber lintel over a 10-pane sash to the left of the door and a gabled roof dormer.
At the rear, there is an early 19th-century block, built of coursed limestone rubble with a gabled 20th-century tile roof and brick end stacks. This section is also two storeys high with a three-window range, featuring flat stone arches over a 19th-century half-glazed door and eight-pane sashes. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
To the right, the mill is constructed of coursed limestone rubble, includes a brick bay, and has a gabled stone slate roof. It features late 19th-century and 19th-century casements, two 20th-century doors, and two gabled roof dormers. The mill is noted to have a mill wheel inside. It is probably built in 1726 for John Hodgkins, as recorded by Brigadier F.R.L. Goadby and the Standlake Local History Society in the Standlake House Survey of 1983.
