Description

The Old Bank House is a house located on Market Street in Woodstock, originally built in the late 17th century and refronted in the mid-18th century. The structure features coursed limestone rubble and a roughcast front with rusticated quoin strips and architraves. It has a gabled stone slate roof, with concrete tiles on the rear and a brick stack on the right. The house has a double-depth plan, is two storeys tall with an attic, and has a four-window range.

A keyed flat arch and scrolled wrought-iron brackets support a flat hood over a late 19th-century six-panelled door, which has two glazed panels, located in the centre. To the left, there is an early 19th-century bow window with early 19th-century sashes and a moulded cornice. The first floor features six-pane sashes with thick glazing bars, set in keyed and rusticated architraves, along with a raised storey band and hipped dormers that contain two-light casements.

At the rear, there are gabled two-storey 18th-century wings, with two mid-18th-century sashes with thick glazing bars on the right, and a similar sash along with a late 18th-century sash in the left wing, which has been extended by the addition of a one-storey outbuilding that was formerly a bakehouse.

Inside, the house contains mid-18th-century and 19th-century panelled doors, chamfered beams, and winder stairs located to the right of the central through passage. The mid-18th-century remodelling of the house is attributed to the Grantham family, who owned it from the 1750s to the 1780s and were notable figures in Woodstock's luxury steel jewelry trade.
