Description
The stable block, located approximately 40 meters northeast of Cornbury House, was built in 1663 by Hugh May and has undergone some later alterations and additions. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with stone slate roofs, featuring hipped roofs over the pavilions. The building is one storey high, with two-storey pavilions.
The northeast front includes a plinth, frieze, and a stone dentil eaves cornice, along with truncated lateral stone stacks on the pavilions. The facade consists of three bays, with a central break and projecting pavilions at each end. The windows are 20th-century small-paned metal types with stone cills, and the pavilions have first-floor 20th-century small-paned two-light metal casements. The central entrance features a panelled door with a radial fanlight, flanked by round-arched niches with rectangular panels beneath. The pavilions also have central first-floor square panels and ground-floor round-arched niches with rectangular panels beneath.
The side elevations are five bays wide, with central first-floor blind windows and ground-floor arched niches. The rear has three-bay pavilions. Later alterations include a three-bay coach house and a porte-cochere added to the center, likely in the early 20th century, possibly between 1901 and 1906. The stable block is positioned on the axis of the main approach to Cornbury House from the northeast, effectively closing off the courtyard on that side of the house.
