Description
The Sutton Courtenay War Memorial is a war memorial built in 1920, designed by Colonel H.E. Morgan Lindsay and constructed by Henry Cooper. It is made of box-ground Bath stone with a cross made from Forest of Dean stone. The memorial has a square plan and is located on a paved area on the Green to the west of the Church of All Saints.
The structure features a tapering square obelisk topped with a cross and includes moulded detailing. Each side of the shaft has an indented panel that displays commemorative inscriptions. The eastern face commemorates the Great War from 1914 to 1918, listing the names and regiments of 25 fallen soldiers, along with the names of six men who were missing in action, with one name updated to reflect his death in Mesopotamia. A dedication to the Second World War is also included at the bottom, stating: "AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO DIED IN THE WAR OF / 1939 1945 / AND LATER CONFLICTS."
The western face lists the names of those who "SERVED OVERSEAS," the southern face records those who "SERVED AT HOME," and the northern face honors those who were "WOUNDED."
