Description

The Mill House is a Grade II listed building located on Cothill Road in Dry Sandford, St. Helen Without. This early to mid-18th century millhouse features uncoursed limestone rubble with a chequer brick front and a gabled roof covered in 20th-century tiles. It has brick end stacks and a rear stack, and the building has a double-depth plan with two storeys and a three-window range. The front door, which has a flat brick arch, is accompanied by a pediment hood above. The windows are 20th-century casements with segmental arches and a raised storey band.

At the rear, there is a two-storey range made of limestone rubble with brick quoins and dressings, and the rear wall is constructed of early 19th-century Flemish bond brick. To the right is the cross-wing of the mill, dating to around 1800, built of coursed limestone rubble with brick quoins and dressings, topped with a gabled old tile roof. This wing has a gabled front with two storeys and a two-window range, featuring segmental brick arches over 20th-century windows and a glazed door. There is also a weatherboard sack hoist and 20th-century garage doors in the right side wall.

The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. Historical graffiti on the jambs of the front doorway includes dates from 1624, 1647, 1679, and initials IG 1734 and ET 1736, which likely commemorate past owners.
