Description
This is a row of three cottages located at Berrycroft, dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century for No. 1, with graffiti dated 1756 for Nos 2 and 3. The cottages are constructed from uncoursed chalk and sarsen rubble, resting on a sarsen base, with No. 3 featuring mid-18th century random bond brickwork. They have thatched roofs and brick stacks. No. 1 was originally built as a one-bay timber-framed cottage, with the chalk walling replacing the timber frame around 1756. No. 1 has a two-unit plan, while Nos 2 and 3 have been significantly altered but likely originally had a two-unit layout with a fireplace, adjoining staircase, and gables featuring 20th-century doors for each cottage. The row is one and a half stories high with a seven-window range, under timber lintels, except for the original first-floor window frames with hinges for shutters on the front and rear dormers of No. 2. The roof is gabled and half-hipped, with brick ridge and end stacks. Inside, No. 1 features an ovolo moulded beam on the right, while No. 2 has 18th-century planked doors. Nos 2 and 3 have 20th-century rear extensions, and No. 3 also has a 20th-century lean-to extension at the front.
