Description

Rockwell House, also known as St. Andrew's School, is a house dating to circa 1730. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick with flared headers, red brick quoins and dressings, and has a C20 tile roof to the front and an older tile roof to the rear. Brick stacks are present. The house has a double-depth plan and is arranged over two storeys and an attic, with a 5-window front. A C18 six-panelled door with an overlight is set within a beaded architrave, topped by a moulded stone hood and pilasters. C18 sash windows are found throughout, with the lower sashes having glazing bars removed. Ground-floor sashes are set within gauged brick flat arches featuring ogee- and wave-moulded soffits, and gauged brick floating cornices with wave-moulded soffits. A moulded cornice runs along the top of the building. Three gabled roof dormers have C18 two-light leaded casements. The roof is gabled, with stacks at the gable ends. C18 sashes are also present on the left and right side walls. Stone lintels are above the C18 sashes and the six-panelled door with overlight to the rear. The interior features C18 two- and six-panelled doors and panelling to the left room and hall. A fine quarter-turn staircase has turned balusters on an open string, fluted newel posts, carved brackets, ramped handrails, and an early C18 latticed door to a cupboard beneath. The first-floor on the left has C18 panelling and early C18 fireplaces are to the right. The attic contains two-panelled doors and a common-rafter roof.
