Description

Number 18A and the attached barn in Wantage is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the late 17th century and features roughcast over brick walling, with a 20th-century tile roof and a brick chimney stack. The building has a two-unit plan and stands two storeys high, with a two-window range. The shop front was added in the 20th century, with an entry on the right side wall. Above the shop front, there are late 18th-century sash windows. The gabled roof is adorned with late 19th-century decorative bargeboards, and there is a rear internal stack.

Inside, there is a late 17th-century three-panelled bolection-moulded door and a two-bay collar-truss roof featuring clasped purlins and wind braces. A notable feature is the 19th-century two-storey extension at the rear right, which connects to the 17th-century timber-framed barn. The barn has square framing with brick infill at the front and late 18th-century English bond brick on the rear and left side walls. It has a half-hipped old tile roof and a brick internal stack at the rear. The left side wall features a segmental arch with a keystone over 20th-century double doors. Inside the barn, there is early 18th-century reset panelling, large 18th-century bread ovens at the rear, and a three-bay queen-post roof.
