Description
Eagles Close Almshouses are a row of almshouses built in 1867 for the Town Commissioners. They are constructed of Flemish bond red brick with limestone ashlar bands and feature an old tile roof adorned with decorative ridge tiles and brick stacks. The design consists of "one-up, one-down" cottages with a rear outshut, arranged over two storeys in a ten-window range.
The entrances are marked by pointed arches made of alternating brick and stone ashlar voussoirs above plank doors, which have decorative strap hinges. Similar tympanum arches are found over the ground-floor three-light casements, some equipped with H-L hinges, and the first-floor features two-light casements. Each pair of doors is separated by four offset buttresses, and there are ashlar bands beneath the window sills on both the first and ground floors. The gabled roof has stone coping along the parapets and ridge stacks. The interior has not been inspected. The almshouses are built in a style similar to Nos. 23 - 37 Mill Street, which were also constructed in 1867.
