Description
Alton House is a house built around 1730-1740, which was refronted around 1780. It features Flemish bond brickwork with flared headers and has an old and 20th-century tiled roof with brick stacks. The building is arranged in an L-shape and has two storeys with a three-window range. The entrance includes a late 18th-century six-panelled door with a decorative fanlight and a pedimented surround. There are gauged brick flat arches over tripartite sashes that flank the door, and stone lintels above the door and the flanking sashes. The house has a parapet and a gabled roof with gable end stacks.
To the rear right, there is a two-storey, two-window range that dates from the 18th century, rendered with a gabled old tile roof and a brick gable end stack. This section features a three-light leaded casement on the left side wall. Additionally, there is a one-storey and attic, two-window range at the rear, made of late 18th-century brick with a hipped old tile roof and a brick ridge stack. This part has segmental arches over late 19th-century two-light casements and a late 18th-century six-panelled door.
Inside, there are mid-18th-century panelled doors and a panelled room from around 1730-1740 with original cupboards flanking the fireplace in the front right room. The rear right section features a reset dog-leg staircase with a landing, dating from around 1730-1740, which has turned balusters on a closed string. A similar staircase leads to the attic, which includes plank doors with original fittings and a common-rafter roof.
