Description
No. 55 Wallingford Street is a late 17th-century building that has been remodelled in the mid-20th century. Originally two cottages, it is now a single house. The front features 20th-century stretcher bond brick and a 20th-century tiled roof, with brick stacks. The building has a two-unit plan and stands two storeys tall, with a two-window range. Soldier arches are present over the 20th-century doors and casements. The roof is gabled with stacks at the gable ends.
At the rear, there is an original one-bay wing that is gabled and has one storey and an attic, which adjoins a two-storey outshut on the left; both of these have also been remodelled in the 20th century. Inside, there are chamfered bressumers, original plain beams, and joists supporting open fireplaces in chalk rubble stacks. The timber-framed walling is exposed throughout, including a timber-framed partition on the first floor. The first floor features 17th-century ribbed doors and winder stairs leading to the attic. The roof structure is common-rafter.
