Description

Two cottages, numbers 5 and 6, are located on Race Farm Lane in Kingston Bagpuiże with Southhoor. These cottages date to the early 17th century. They are constructed of coursed limestone rubble with a gabled stone slate roof, along with brick ridge and right-end stacks. The cottages were originally planned with two units, and number 6 has a two-unit lobby-entry plan to its left. The two storeys feature a three-window range. Timber lintels are above the 20th-century front door and windows, with the exception of a leaded stair-light to the right of the centre. The interior of number 6 includes chamfered ogee-stopped beam and a 19th-century winder staircase to the left; to the right is a chamfered roll-stopped beam and a similar bressumer over an open fireplace, which contains a bread oven. The first-floor space features a collar truss with a lateral chamfered spine beam to the right, with chamfered soffits to the collar, butt purlins and moulded principal rafters. Number 5 was not inspected, but it is likely to be of interest.
