Description
This is a house, likely dating from the mid-16th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. It is built of uncoursed rubble stone to the left ground floor, red brick to the ground floor centre, and render, probably over stone rubble except for brick on the 20th-century work. The roof is covered in old plain tiles, with a brick ridge stack to the left of centre and an end stack to the right. The house has a 3-unit plan, including a through-passage to the left of centre. The front has a two-storey, three-window arrangement. A 20th-century plank door is located to the left of centre, set within a 4-centre arched wooden surround carved with spandrels. Two-storey bay windows, also 20th-century, are located to the centre and right forming a glazed loggia to the right of centre. A 2-light casement window is present on the first floor to the left. The interior, which was not inspected, is noted as having richly moulded beams in the hall and a queen-post roof structure. The house is discussed in detail in “Smaller Domestic Architecture and Society in North Berkshire c,1300--c,1650, with special reference to Steventon,” a 1976 doctoral thesis by C.R.J. Currie from Oxford University.
