Description

This is a farmhouse, now a house, with origins in the 15th century. An addition was made in the early 17th century, followed by another addition to the rear in the mid 17th century, and a front range in the late 18th century. The building is constructed of red brick with an old plain-tile roof and brick end stacks. The front facade is two storeys high and features a three-window arrangement. A four-panel door is located in the centre, with a 20th-century open porch. All windows are segmental-headed 12-pane sashes, set within segmental brick heads. A flat brick band runs between the ground and first floors. A rear cross-range is constructed of irregular timber framing with brick infill. The interior was not inspected, but it is noted to contain remains of a cruck truss. According to research by C.R.J. Currie, the building provides insight into smaller domestic architecture and society in North Berkshire between 1300 and 1650, with particular relevance to Steventon.
