Description
Lower Whitley Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid-17th century, which was remodeled in the 20th century. It is constructed of uncoursed limestone rubble, with a rendered front added in the 20th century. The roof is gabled and covered with stone slates, featuring a stone end stack finished in 20th-century brick and a rear lateral stack finished in 18th-century brick. The building has a three-unit plan, is two storeys tall with an attic, and has a four-window range. The doors and windows have been replaced in the 20th century. At the rear, there is a 20th-century porch that connects to a stair-turret, and a 20th-century wing on the front left.
Inside, the right bay features stop-chamfered beams and a fine open-well staircase with pierced splat balusters, carved newel finials, and pendentives. The right bay of the first floor includes a ribbed door set in a moulded wood architrave, with "DEM" and "1650" carved in the spandrels. The attic has a fireplace with a plasterwork overmantle that includes grotesque designs over strapwork. The roof structure is a collar-truss design with butt purlins.
