Description

Tawney's Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates back to 1647, as indicated by a datestone on the left side. It was extended in the early to mid-18th century and has undergone some alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble, with 18th-century brick on the rear left and 20th-century brick in the left gable. It features a gabled stone slate roof, a brick ridge stack, and a 17th-century stone ridge stack that was originally at the end of the building.

The farmhouse has a one-unit plan that has been extended to a three-unit lobby-entry plan. It is two storeys high and has a three-window range. There are timber lintels, some of which are from the 20th century, over a 20th-century door that has carved brackets supporting a pediment hood, along with 20th-century windows. Under the eaves, there is a stone-slate perch and doveholes that extend across the right gable. To the right, there is a 20th-century one-storey extension.

At the rear, there is a one-storey, one-bay wing that was originally timber-framed, but its walls have mostly been rebuilt in the 20th century. This wing adjoins a bread oven projection on the left. Inside, the kitchen on the right features a reversed beam. The central room has a chamfered beam on the left, while the left room has a chamfered beam and an open fireplace, with heart-shaped steps leading to a chamfered bressumer, similar to the 1661 extension at The Old Rectory in Standlake. The roof is supported by collar trusses.
