Description

The Stanton Harcourt War Memorial is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Michael, which is a Grade I-listed building, near the north-west entrance gate. Constructed from local limestone, this tall memorial features a medieval-style lantern-cross topped with a canopied design that includes intricate architectural details. Each side of the lantern has a panel of blind tracery with relief carvings. Two sides depict the crucifixion and St Michael slaying a dragon, while the other two sides display shields hanging from ribbons.

The lantern is mounted on a tapering, octagonal column that has a decorated capital and a moulded foot. This column is supported by an octagonal plinth, which in turn rests on a two-stage, square base. The lower stage features a shallow cornice that extends outward, providing space for wreaths. All inscriptions on the memorial are incised.

On the west face of the lower stage of the base, the inscription reads: "TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE FROM THIS PARISH WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR." The names of those who fell in the First World War are inscribed on the four faces of the upper stage. Additionally, the south face of the lower stage bears the inscription "1939-1945," with the names of those who fell in the Second World War listed below.
