Description
White Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, which was remodelled and extended on the sides in the early 19th century. It was originally timber-framed on a limestone rubble plinth, with four panels of framing remaining in the rear right wall; the rest of the structure is made of early 19th century colourwashed English garden wall bond brick. The house features a gabled thatch roof with a stone stack finished in brick at what is now the ridge. It has a two-unit plan that has been extended to four units and is one storey with an attic, presenting a two-window range.
The central door, which is from the 20th century, has a timber lintel and is sheltered by a glazed 20th-century porch. The early 19th-century two-light casements with plank shutters also have timber lintels, and there are two-light dormer casements. The sides of the house have early to mid-19th-century brick bays under the same roof. Inside, the room to the left features a stop-chamfered beam and a similar bressumer over an open fireplace, while the right room has a reset moulded beam from the 16th century. The first floor contains early 19th-century plank doors and a butt-purlin roof. The building is included for its group value.
