Description

Number 17 and the Estate Office is a vicarage that has been converted into a house and office. It dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with a refronting and extension added to the rear in the late 17th century. The building is constructed from uncoursed limestone rubble and features a gabled stone slate roof. There is a rendered external stack on the right and a 19th-century stack on the left. The structure is L-shaped with a rear right wing and is two storeys tall, presenting a three-window range.

The entrance includes a brick segmental arch above a 19th-century plank door, which is topped by a gabled bracketed hood. Similar segmental arches are found over late 17th-century cross windows with leaded lights, alongside a blocked window above the door. Timber lintels are present over two- and three-light leaded-light windows that flank a blocked doorway with a 20th-century casement. The rear wing is built from similar materials and also features two storeys with a three-window range, including raised brick segmental-arched surrounds to 20th-century windows and three late 17th-century cross windows with leaded lights.

Inside, the Estate Office contains late 16th-century moulded beams and moulded stone fireplaces, though only partial inspection is possible. Number 17 has boxed beams at the front and hollow-chamfered quartered beams at the rear. This building is historically significant as an early meeting place for John and Charles Wesley during the time of John Gambold, who later became a Moravian bishop.
