Description

These are two cottages located on the west side of Leys Road, Cumnor. The origins of the cottages date back to the 17th century, with a later 17th-century extension added to the left. The construction combines limestone rubble, with the stonework being largely uncoursed on the right side and coursed on the left. The roofs are gabled and thatched, with a stone stack incorporating a dripcourse and a brick flue visible on the left gable of the right-hand cottage. Another stone stack, finished in brick, is present at the left end. The cottages are arranged in a two-range plan, extended to three units. They are one storey high with an attic. The right-hand cottage, which is taller, has a timber lintel above a 20th-century door. The left-hand cottage, with a two-window range, has timber lintels over 20th-century one- and three-light casement windows. Dormer casement windows with surrounding 20th-century roof tiles are also present in the attic. A bay to the left includes timber lintels over a 20th-century door and a three-light casement. The interior of No. 38 (the right-hand cottage) shows no visible features; No. 40 was not inspected.
