Description

Ardington Post Office and the attached house were built around 1895. The structure features a red brick plinth and large timber framing with rendered infill, topped by an old plain-tile roof and a central brick ridge stack. Designed in an "Old English" style, it is a single storey with an attic and has a two-window range. The ground floor includes two wooden oriel windows with hipped roofs and glazing bars, while the attic has two gabled half-dormers with two-light casements and shaped bargeboards. On the left side, there is a plank door, and the attic is jettied. A wood oriel window with a gabled roof is located at the gable end of the roof. The interior has not been inspected. The Post Office is connected to the house by a covered walkway with a wood baluster screen. The Post Office itself has a brick plinth and an old plain-tile roof, forming an L-plan with additional sections. It is a single storey with a three-window range that is positioned at right angles to the house. There is a panel door to the right of the center, and the windows feature irregular arrangements of wood mullions and transoms. Historically, the village shop, now the Post Office, was established as a co-operative based on the Rochdale system by Lord Wantage for his tenants.
