Description

A smithy with an attached cottage and three adjoining cottages forming a row, dating from the 17th century (Teallach and Craven Cottages) and the late 18th century. The building is constructed of uncoursed sarsen rubble, with chalk rubble to the rear; brick quoins and dressings are present on Old Forge Cottage, chalk quoins on Teallach Cottage, a squared and coursed chalk base with chalk quoins on Craven Cottage, and the adjoining end cottage has a rendered facade. Roofs are thatched, except for Old Forge Cottage which has an old tile roof, and brick stacks are visible.

The building has a nine-window range, with Old Forge Cottage being two storeys high, while the others are 1 1/2 storeys. There are 20th-century doors except for a ledged door in the 1 1/2-storey smithy section. One late 19th-century two-light casement window is found in the cottage adjoining Teallach Cottage. The other windows are largely 20th-century casements, with two mid- to late-19th-century three-light casements on the ground floor of Teallach Cottage. All doors and windows have wood lintels and segmental brick arches. A brick band with segmental brick arches links a five-bay arcade at the ground floor of the Old Smithy section, containing two doors (one blocked) and three central windows (one blocked).

Inside the Old Smithy, there are two forging hearths and a three-bay queen-strut roof with butt purlins. Other cottages feature chamfered spine beams with run-out stops.
