Description
The Village Hall and Reading Room in Buscot was built in 1897 by architects Sir Ernest George and Alfred Yeates for Alexander Henderson of Buscot Park, as noted on the clock tower. This building stands out from the nearby Cotswold estate houses due to its more developed Arts and Crafts style, featuring unique Classical elements. It is constructed of coursed rubble stone with stone dressings and has a gabled stone tiled roof adorned with ball finials and scrolls along the eaves. The structure includes stone stacks and consists of a long range with a round-arched loggia on the south side, an east wing, and a clock tower on the south. The building is single-storey and features 2- and 5-light round-headed mullioned windows on the west front, as well as 2- and 4-light flat-headed mullioned windows on the north side. The prominent clock tower is two storeys high, featuring a stone clock chamber with elegantly moulded Ionic angle pilasters that lead to an open ringing stage made of wood, topped with a weather vane. A contemporary L-shaped wooden seat is located in the loggia.
