Description

This is a row of three cottages, now used as shops, located in Grove Street, Wantage. The core of the building dates to the late 17th century, but it was substantially re-clad with brickwork in the mid-19th century. The facade is of colourwashed brick with an old tile roof and brick stacks. The building has a three-unit plan and an 8-window front. Segmental arches define the entrances to numbers 15 and 17, and there are 20th-century shop fronts and windows. The upper floor has five late 19th-century three-light casement windows and three blind windows, with dentilled eaves. The roof has a gable on the left and a hip on the right, with ridge and rear internal stacks. An outshut, with a 19th-century plank door, is located at the rear.

At the rear right is a smaller, early 18th-century building, originally a one-window range, constructed of Flemish bond brick with a gabled old tile roof and a brick ridge stack.

The interiors of numbers 15 and 17 retain chamfered beams and winder stairs that abut the dividing stack. Number 19 features quartered, chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, a quarter-turn staircase, and some panelling dating to around 1730-40 in the rear wing.
