Description

A dovecote and granary, dating from the late 18th century, stands approximately 20 metres west of Britchcombe Farmhouse. The structure is built of brick in a Flemish bond pattern, featuring flared headers, and has a roof of stone slate. Originally two storeys high, the front face of the dovecote looks towards the farmhouse. A segmental arch spans the site of a blocked central door, and a full dormer window was added in the late 19th century. A plank door, protected by a timber lintel, is set within the right gable wall, and a 2-light window, also under a timber lintel, is present in the left gable wall. A banded eaves course runs across the gable ends. A timber glover is positioned centrally on the ridge, above a gabled roof. Internally, the floor has collapsed, but it is evident that the granary was originally raised above ground level, with the dovecote located on the upper level. There are brick nesting boxes and a three-bay queen-strut roof, with closely spaced trusses designed to support the glover.
