Description
Richardson of Watlington is a house that now serves as both a residence and a shop. It dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century and was remodeled and extended to the right in the early 18th century. The original structure was timber-framed, with the front made of knapped flint rubble and closely-spaced vertical brick strips. The left side and rear wall are constructed of Flemish bond brick with flared headers. The building features a half-hipped roof, covered with 20th-century tiles at the front and older tiles at the rear, along with brick stacks at the rear lateral and rear end. The layout is L-shaped with a rear left wing and consists of two storeys with a three-window range. There is a 20th-century flat brick arch over a 20th-century door, and a segmental brick arch above a horned sash window to the right. To the left, there is a late 18th-century canted bay with 20th-century windows, and on the first floor, there are late 19th-century to early 20th-century two- and three-light casements. At the rear of the left wing, there is a one-storey, one-bay range featuring square timber framing with brick infill. Inside, there is a full set of chamfered and stopped beams and joists on the left side. The first floor and rear have not been inspected but are likely to be of interest.
