Description

This is a house, now used as a library and a flat, dating to the mid to late 16th century, with significant remodelling in the mid 19th century. Originally built with a timber frame, the front of the building was later faced with Flemish bond brick, featuring flared brick headers. The remainder of the structure is flint rubble with brick dressings, and the roof is covered in old gabled tiles, with a brick stack on the left end. The building has a three-unit plan and two storeys, with a three-window front. The front has a flat-gauged brick arch over a mid 19th century four-panelled door with an overlight. There are mid 19th century horned sash windows to the left, a mid 19th century shop front with a 20th-century door to the right, and timber lintels over the first-floor windows. Dentilled eaves are a prominent feature. A two-storey brick wing from the 18th century is located at the rear to the left. Inside, the ground floor features quartered cased beams, including one stop-chamfered beam with run-out stops. The first floor is open to a three-bay queen-post roof with curved wind braces and clasped purlins. A two-storey stuccoed bay on the right side has a mid 19th century horned sash over a horizontal sliding sash and a mid 19th century two-panelled door. A 16th-century chamfered arch-braced collar truss is also present.
