Description

Cuxham Mill is a mill and millhouse dating from the mid 18th century, with possible earlier origins. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick featuring flared headers and has a gabled old tile roof with a brick ridge stack. The building has a four-unit plan and stands two storeys high, displaying a four-window range with scattered fenestration. There are segmental arches over a two-panelled stable door and 20th-century doors in the outer bays, as well as a segmental arch over a two-light casement to the right. Flat brick arches and timber lintels are present over two-light casements, including two leaded casements to the left. The left gable wall features a plank loft door leading to the granary.

At the rear, there is a two-storey block made of coursed chalk rubble with brick dressings, also topped with a gabled old tile roof and a brick lateral stack. Inside, there is an iron overshot wheel to the left of the central entry and a round-arched fireplace in the rear right room. Winder stairs are located at the junction with the rear wing, and old purlins can be seen in the roof. The rear block may be an earlier mill building. This mill site was one of three Cuxham mills mentioned in 1086 and was given to the Prior of Wallingford before Merton College, Oxford, acquired the manor between 1268 and 1271.
