Description
Down Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th century, with a front added in the mid 18th century and some alterations made in the 20th century. It is constructed of red brick with grey brick headers in Flemish bond and features an old plain-tile half-hipped roof. The house has a brick ridge stack located to the left of the center and a lateral stack to the right.
The layout follows a 3-unit baffle-entry plan and consists of two storeys and an attic, with a three-window range. The entrance is a 20th-century plank door situated to the left of center, which is sheltered by a gabled plain-tile hood. To the left of the door is a 20th-century two-light casement window with a segmental brick head. In the center, there is a 20th-century angled-bay window topped with a plain-tile hipped roof, and to the right, another 20th-century two-light casement window. A flat brick band runs between the ground and first floors.
On the first floor, there is a central three-light leaded wood casement window, flanked by two-light casement windows on either side. The attic features a gabled full dormer with a two-light casement window in the center. The left and right returns of the building display angle-braced timber-framing with brick infill on the first floor and attic. Inside, there are dog-leg stairs and a queen-post roof. The ground floor left includes an open fireplace with a domed bread-oven, while the right side has a timber-framed partition with brick infill.
