Description
The Castles of Wallingford and Pettits shops represent an early 19th-century building, with alterations made in the early 20th century. The building is located on the west side of St. Mary’s Street in Wallingford. It is a three-storey structure with a twelve-window frontage. The ground floor features five 20th-century shop fronts with lined render over brickwork. The roof is covered in old plain tiles, and brick ridge stacks are visible, some of which have been shortened. The ground floor has five 20th-century doors corresponding to the shop fronts. The first floor presents two tripartite sashes to the centre, with the left-hand sash featuring glazing bars. Two 12-pane unhorned sashes are positioned to the left of the centre, and two 20th-century windows occupy original openings to the left. Four sashes with glazing bars are found to the right. All first-floor windows have rendered architrave surrounds and bracketed cornices. The second floor contains nine-pane unhorned sashes with architrave surrounds. A dentil cornice runs along the eaves, topped by a plain parapet. The interior has undergone 20th-century alterations.
