Description

Apple Tree Cottage is a house dating from the 15th or 16th century, which was re-faced in the late 18th or 19th century. It features cruck framing and is re-faced with colourwashed limestone rubble, complemented by brick quoins and dressings. The house has a gabled roof covered with old tiles at the front and 20th-century tiles at the rear. There is a 16th-century brick ridge stack and a later end stack, both finished in 19th-century brick. The layout is a three-unit plan, with one storey and an attic, and it has a three-window range.

The front has a central 20th-century door with a 20th-century porch, a blocked door to the right, a glazed door to the left, and a 20th-century casement window in the right outer bay, along with 20th-century roof dormers. Inside, there are two pairs of raised crucks with collars and chamfered through purlins. The room to the right contains a full set of chamfered and stopped beams and joists. This house appears to be a two-storey dwelling, which is unusual for cruck-built houses in the area that typically feature open halls.
