Description

Camden House, located at 53 New Street, dates back to 1729, as indicated by a date on the rainwater pipe. The building features a silver grey brick facade complemented by red brick quoins and window dressings. It has a rubbed red brick string course, window arches, and a surround to a panel. The roof is tiled and half hipped where it connects to the Red Cross Public House to the west. The structure is two storeys high and includes a moulded wooden modillion eaves and an attic with three flat-roofed dormers.

The house consists of four bays with sash windows that have flush frames, although the glazing was altered in the late 18th century or early 19th century. Each floor has a bay window with a flat, lead-covered roof that was added during this time. The panel on the first floor features an architrave made of red rubbed bricks, with crude Ionic volutes carved at the outer top corners and initials inscribed on five centre bricks of the arch. The doorway has been modified but retains a contemporary projecting curved hood with a panelled soffit. The entrance includes a ten-panelled door, with the top two panels now glazed.

Camden House is part of a group that includes Nos 37 to 43 (odd), White Cottage, the Malthouse of Henley Brewery, Nos 51 to 55 (odd), and Wattle Cottage, as well as Nos 84 to 88 (even) and No 29 Thameside.
